Tuition & Housing Charges are Due

You can view your charges & deadlines in the Finances section in your Student Center by logging into your myhumboldt portal.

  • If you have enough aid to cover your charges, then you do not need to pay by the payment deadline and your charges will be paid when funds are disbursed; tuition/fees are paid first, then Housing/Dining if you are living on campus.
  • If you have some aid but not enough to cover your tuition & fees, then you must pay the difference or set-up an Installment Payment Plan for Tuition/Fees by the deadline with Student Accounts.
  • If you have some aid but not enough to cover your Housing/Dining charges, then you must pay the difference or review and revise your payment plan by logging-in your myHousing or contact the Housing & Residential Life Cashier at: 707.826.5510 or housingcashier@humboldt.edu
  • If you have not yet been awarded Financial Aid, then you must pay your charges or set-up an Installment Payment Plan with one or both offices. We encourage you to contact our office to determine the progress of your file.

Financial Aid will Disburse into your Student Account

5 business days prior to the first day of the fall semester if you meet all disbursement requirements in order for you to receive your Financial Aid Award. All university charges will be paid immediately after your aid is disbursed.

Freeze Deadline

You only have two weeks from the first day of instruction to add or drop your classes before Financial Aid takes a snap shot of your enrollment. If full-time aid disburses and you are enrolled in less than full-time units, you may end up owing money to the government or HSU. Avoid having to deal with unnecessary charges. Maintain Your Eligibility

It is important that you meet Satisfactory Academic Progress every semester you are receiving Financial Aid in order to maintain your eligibility. If you are considering dropping a course, withdrawing, or are not doing well in a class or this academic term, please stop by and speak to one of our walk-in Financial Aid Counselors so that we may advise you properly.

Search for Scholarships

We encourage you to start looking near home at local foundations, chambers of commerce, businesses and organizations. Many of these organizations offer scholarships to students staying in the area or going away to college. Never pay for a scholarship search; there are plenty of Internet-based services that do it for free. Click here for more Scholarship information.

Create or Reset your FSA ID or DREAM account.

Get ready and be prepared, it's almost time to submit your Financial Aid application beginning October 1. Create or Reset your account egin the application. Make sure that each person that is required to sign your application as an account.

Apply Early & Every Year

October 1 is the first day to submit your Financial Aid Application for the upcoming 2018-2019 academic school year. If you are still interested in receiving aid for the 2017-2018 academic school year, the application is still open.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • for US Citizens & eligible Non-Citizens
  • determines eligibility for federal aid
  • determines eligibility for state aid (if CA resident)

OR (only submit one application)

Cal DREAM ACT Application

  • for Non-Citizens who reside in CA
  • for AB540 eligible students
  • determines eligibility for state aid

After You Apply

Review your Student Aid Report (SAR) if you submitted the FAFSA OR your Cal Student Aid Report (CalSAR) if you submitted the DREAM ACT application. This document provides you with a record of the information that was submitted on your application and basic information regarding your eligibility for aid. If necessary, make the appropriate corrections to your application.

Cal Grant Eligibility

California residents and eligible AB540 students will be notified directly by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) of their Cal Grant eligibility. Stay informed and create a WebGrants for Students account.

Verification

Students may be selected for a process called verification, where the Financial Aid Office is required to verify certain documents to ensure that your application is accurate. If selected, you will be notified via email regarding which forms and documents you and/or your parent/s will have to submit to our office. These items will be listed on your To-Do List in the Student Center on your myHumboldt portal. Please note: Only submit requested information to our office.

Reminder

Financial Aid is awarded to new students for the Spring semester and is awarded based on full-time attendance.

If you will not be enrolled full-time, you must complete and submit a Change Form to our office in advance of aid disbursement, with the number of units you plan to take each term. Your award may need to be revised. Some programs require full-time attendance, so check with our office if you have questions about attending less than full-time.

Apply For HSU Scholarships

Application opens January 1 - Search for scholarships available from HSU departments and private organizations. HSU's Scholarship Management System has information on over 200 scholarships. Click the Scholarships button on your myhumboldt portal to get started!

Financial Aid Award Notifications

HSU begins the student aid awarding process for the upcoming academic school year and continues to award students on a weekly basis throughout the year.

  • Students receive their Financial Aid Award Notification via email
  • Review your Financial Aid Award in your Student Center and accept or decline your aid
  • You can accept the full amount or reduce the amount of awarded funds, particularly loans, if you do not think you will need it. We encourage you to borrow as you go
  • Use budget calculators to help you budget for college

Planning to take classes over the summer?

There are several factors that determine your Financial Aid eligibility. Call or stop by our office to check if you are eligible to receive Summer Aid.

Check your To Do List

Visit the Student Center to make sure all requirements have been met. For instance, to check your admissions status, or for new requirements such as Loan Entrance Counseling or Direct Loan Master Promissory Notes, which may have posted (you will be notified by email when new requirements post).

Notify the Financial Aid Office

If you receive a scholarship or other non-HSU educational resources, you must notify the Financial Aid Office by completing and submitting a CHANGE FORM; previously awarded aid may be adjusted once newly reported resources are coordinated. You may also need to provide the scholarship source with verification of your enrollment, which is available from the Registrar, first floor Student Business Services Bldg.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Satisfactory Academic Progress is determined after grades are posted if you are a current student however, if you are an incoming student, your status will be listed an undetermined as there are no grades to process.

Summer Aid

Our office manually reviews each student enrolled to determine eligibility. Each student is notified via email regarding their aid eligibility. Click here for more information.

Exit Loan Counseling

If you have recently graduated, taken a leave of absence, or your enrollment has dropped below 6 units, you must complete this beneficial online exit counseling so that you are aware of your options as a borrower and/or if you are returning to campus we are able disburse future funds.
